Glossary
DPP, standards, and regulatory terms.
Plain-language definitions for the terms that come up in DPP evaluation.
- Digital Product Passport (DPP)
- A structured, machine-readable record of a product's evidence and compliance data, accessible via a unique product identifier (typically a GS1 Digital Link URL or QR code). EU ESPR mandates DPPs across multiple product groups. [ESPR]
- ESPR — Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation
- EU Regulation 2024/1781 setting the framework for ecodesign and digital product passport requirements across product groups. Battery passports are mandatory from Feb 2027 (under separate Battery Regulation 2023/1542); textile, steel, and other delegated acts are working-plan signals, not yet adopted. [ESPR]
- EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542
- Mandates battery passports for industrial and EV batteries from 18 February 2027 (Annex XIII data + Article 77 access rights). Due-diligence obligations: 18 August 2027 (postponed). [EU Battery Reg]
- UNTP — UN Transparency Protocol
- Open specification by UN/CEFACT for digital product passport data. Provides a JSON-LD vocabulary, identity resolver, and credential model. Currently pre-production pilot status — vendor claims of 'UNTP-compliant' should be evaluated carefully. [UNTP]
- GS1 Digital Link
- Standard for encoding GS1 identifiers (GTIN, batch, serial) in Web URIs. Pattern: `/01/{gtin14}/21/{serial}`. Lets one URL serve multiple views (HTML, JSON-LD) via content negotiation. [GS1 Digital Link]
- JSON-LD
- JSON for Linked Data — a JSON-based serialization for graph-structured data with typed `@context`. The standard format for UNTP-aligned passport output.
- GTIN-14
- Global Trade Item Number, 14 digits. The GS1 product identifier used as the primary key in DPP / Digital Link URLs. [GS1 Digital Link]
- Material Allocation
- The per-product, evidence-linked record of which evidence (transaction certificate, scope certificate, test report) backs which claim. Records the allocation method (BOM-weight, unit-weight, equal-split, manual). What SellSafely does. Not a certified balance system.
- Material Ledger
- A certified balance-reconciliation system that tracks volumes of certified material available for sale, like Textile Exchange Trackit. Bank-account-style accounting at the organizational level. Operated by a certifying body. [Textile Exchange Trackit]
- Trackit
- Textile Exchange's certified balance-reconciliation platform for certified material volumes (GOTS, OCS, GRS, RCS). Operates at the organizational-volume level. Distinct from material allocation (per-product evidence chain). [Textile Exchange Trackit]
- Scope Certificate (SC)
- Certifies that an organization has been audited against a standard's organizational-capability requirements (e.g., a facility is GOTS-certified to process organic cotton). Does NOT certify any specific shipment — that's a Transaction Certificate's job.
- Transaction Certificate (TC)
- Certifies a specific certified-material shipment with article numbers, order numbers, EAN/SKU. The evidence backing per-product claims. Issued by certifying bodies for certified shipments.
- EPR — Extended Producer Responsibility
- Regulatory framework requiring producers to fund end-of-life management of products (e.g., textile take-back). Eco-modulation fees vary by material composition / recyclability — DPP data feeds EPR fee calculation.
- CSRD — Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive
- EU directive requiring large companies to report on sustainability performance. Product-level evidence from DPPs feeds CSRD reporting; building once for DPP enables reuse for CSRD.
- REACH
- EU Regulation 1907/2006 on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. Article 33 requires informing recipients about Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) in articles. Test reports support compliance. [REACH]
- CBAM — Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism
- EU Regulation 2023/956. Importers of carbon-intensive goods (cement, iron/steel, aluminum, fertilizers, electricity, hydrogen) must report embedded emissions. Steel embedded-carbon data overlaps with future steel DPP scope. [CBAM]
- EU DPP Registry
- Decentralized registry announced by the European Commission for DPP discovery and verification. Goes live July 2026. SellSafely treats registry integration as a separate phase — passports today are GS1 Digital Link-addressable but not yet registry-registered. [EU DPP Registry]
- W3C Verifiable Credential (VC)
- W3C standard for cryptographically signed credentials with verifiable issuer / subject / proof. UNTP credentials are W3C VCs. SellSafely outputs UNTP-aligned JSON-LD today; full VC issuance with cryptographic signatures is roadmap. [W3C VC]
- Rulepack
- SellSafely's source-controlled, versioned validation engine. Each sector has a rulepack (textile-v1.0, battery-v1.0) that encodes the regulatory rules driving readiness state. Fully auditable.
- Readiness state
- GREEN / AMBER / RED state per product per claim, computed deterministically from rulepack + evidence. Drives the decision-centric review queue ('12 decisions unblock 8,500 SKUs').
